• Boende: brandforsikring, 1862, matr. 91b, Sandbakkerne, Hasle.

This story of the lives of Anine Mantine Deem Law and of her mother Elizabeth Margrethe Marcher Deem includes a brief account of Jorgen Larsen Dam, Anine's father, and of Jens Pedersen Marcher and Malline Kirsten Ancher, her grandparents, and was told by Anine herself and written down by her daughter, Mabel Law Atkinson, in April 1932. Later notes and evaluations of Anine's life by her daughter are also included.
My father, Jorgen Larsen Dam, was born 5 Aug. 1809 at Østerlarsker in Bornholm, Denmark, the son of Lars Jorgensen Dam and Kirsten Mogensen. He and Mother were married 21 July 1860. Father was a miller in his early life, then he moved around different places working at several different trades, but at last settled down as a small farmer at Melsted, Bornholm. Here at Melsted the fish were seined in nearly every morning, as Iremember, and such a busy time there was to divide the fish and hand out to those who were waiting for a portion to take out in the country and sell to friends and customers while they were fresh. My father would get his wheelbarrow full and then go on his errand of distributing the fish to those awaiting him. This was his
work along with his small farm for years after he settled in Melsted. His land was not too good, but I remember we raised potatoes. Even these were not very large, but good. We children took delight in helping Father dig and gather and store the potatoes for winter.
Father was good to us and was a good man, but he did not keep his promise to Mother. He did not like the Mormons, and no Mormon could come to our home while he was alive. So the Elders did not come our way then, but I remember that Mother and my oldest sister Angeline would sometimes attend a Mormon meeting some distance away, unbeknowns to Father. It was a long walk but they were so happy after returning from hearing the Elders explain more of the gospel that they felt more than repaid. Mother was a wonderful woman, trusting in God always. She had great faith and loved to do the things she knew would please the Lord.
Mother taught we children gospel principles, and instilled in us a desire to come to Zion. remember she would sit up at night and sew as long as she could keep her eyes open. She did much sewing for different people, and while doing so she would tell us about our Father in Heaven and how good he would be to us if we would do what was right. It was here at her knee that she implanted a love of God in my soul. I used to envy
Angeline who was the oldest and sat up with Mother later than the rest of us. Sometimes she would read to Mother as she sewed.
Peter, born 4 Apr. 1871. All of us were born on the island of Bornholm, but in different places. I was born at Østerlarsker.
I was six when my father died. He had not been strong for some time, and for a while had been truly ill. During the time of his illness he repented that he had not investigated Mormonism, and wanted to know of Mother if she and the Lord would forgive him. He seemed to know he would not live long, and wanted to be saved, and wondered what could be done for him. Now Mother was given the chance to explain the gospel to him as she understood it. She was not at a loss for words, and gently and tenderly explained its principles. This made Father feel at ease. He thought the principle of repentance was most beautiful. We did not expect his death quite as soon as it came. Mother was away quite some distance washing and had left me to watch Father.
All at once he told me to hurry for Mother. I ran to do his bidding. Mother saw me coming and sensed what was wanted. As soon as she entered the room she knew she was in the presence of death. The last words Father said were "I'm sorry. Forgive me and do what you can for me". Mother replied gently "I forgive you", and he was gone. This was on 3 June 1875. What a lonely world it seemed with Father gone!
Beskrivelsen fortsætter med de efterladtes videre færd til Utah, hvor deres efterkommere stadig bor.
